Most downtown Seattle bike commuters are well acquainted with the confusing and, at times, terrifying 2nd Ave. experience. On Monday morning, two weeks after the collision that killed cyclist Sher Kung, the city unveiled its new, improved (we hope) 2nd Ave. bike lanes, which feature plastic bollards and new traffic signals that should protect cyclists from drivers making lefthand turns. Or ar least makes the intersection less confusing. For a thorough accounting of all the changes, see transpo reporter Mike Lindblom’s story in The Seattle Times. For a "rider review," take a look at the Crosscut piece from Josh Cohen, who rode the new lanes this morning. Note to cyclists and drivers: Take time to study the new lane set up; it's definitely an improvement, but you'll still need to keep your wits about you.
