Developer Kemper Freeman today said that Asia is driving much of the Eastside’s growth and thus much of his plan to invest in more Bellevue hotel, retail, residential and office space. Freeman said that 38 countries, on average, are represented in his Bellevue hotels each night. Along with JPMorgan Chase’s Phyllis Campbell and host Patti Payne of the Puget Sound Business Journal, Freeman spoke to a ballroom full of Overlake Hospital supporters. He said that while this is his development company’s largest investment it may be its most conservative. “The market is already here,” he said, contrasting it with more aspirational investments of the past.Overlake is a nonprofit hospital that raises money each year to pay for new technologies and initiatives. Freeman revealed he has spent a few days at Overlake unexpectedly and was very complimentary except for one thing:: They didn’t have Jello. The head chef at Overlake quickly rectified the situation when the alert Overlake CEO mentioned Freeman’s desires. Best guess: No cubes of Jello for Freeman — just some Bellevue Squares. — G.S.
