Today's date, August 6, marks two historic events. First is the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. This act outlawed any voting laws or restrictions that discriminated against minorities. Most notably the literacy tests which were intentionally created to prevent African Americans from voting were removed.
Today’s date is also the 70th anniversary of the bombing at Hiroshima, Japan. USA Today reports that tens of thousands of people took part in a minute of reverent silence at Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park.
