Fighting native suicides

Native American tribes around the country are fighting back against youth suicide rates that a study last month put at more than twice that of any other youth population. The Seattle Times' Linda Mapes reported from youth trainings held by the Lummi nation. Mapes also looked at other native programs in Washington State, including the Spokane tribe whose leaders are reaching out to other tribes around the country. According to Mapes, cuts in federal healthcare funding will likely hit the tribes especially hard, further depleting mental health programs that are already often underfunded.
