Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant, a Methodist pastor, and a Sea-Tac Airport worker were arrested last November when they refused to disperse during a protest outside Alaska Airlines' Sea-Tac headquarters.
Today is their trial.
The protest was over Alaska Airline’s lawsuit to block the new $15 minimum wage from applying to the airport. According to the Seattle Times, one reporter wondered whether it was appropriate for Sawant “to be arrested and to become involved in another city’s matters." Sawant responded by calling protesting “my political duty to all the people who elected me,” crediting Sea-Tac workers for paving the way for Seattle to begin raising its own minimum wage.
